Chandigarh EV Policy: a boost to electric mobility in the City Beautiful
What the Union Territory’s electric vehicle policy actually pays you, who qualifies, and where the quota has reached.

Chandigarh has been one of the more deliberate EV states in northern India, thanks to the electric vehicle policy introduced by the Union Territory Administration. The objective is straightforward: cut air pollution and carbon emissions by moving residents off fuel-powered vehicles and onto clean, efficient electric mobility — and make that switch financially worth making.
Why the policy matters
Electric vehicles stopped being a trend and became the practical default for short urban trips. The Administration launched the policy in September 2022 for a five-year period running to September 2027, with the aim of gradually phasing fuel-powered vehicles out of the city’s registration base while making EVs measuratively cheaper to own.
Incentives and subsidies: how you benefit
The biggest single advantage is the government incentive for EV buyers. To qualify you must be a Chandigarh resident and purchase and register the vehicle locally — an incentive meant for the city does not travel with a registration taken in another state.
The scheme promotes a wide range of vehicle categories, covering capacity for roughly 42,000 vehicles across:
- E-cycles
- Electric two-wheelers
- Commercial EVs — e-rickshaws and cargo vehicles
- Electric cars, personal and non-personal
Incentives range from ₹3,000 to ₹2,00,000 depending on vehicle type and category, which is a real cost saving rather than a rounding error on a scooter price.
Where the car subsidy stands
Personal electric cars originally carried benefits of up to ₹1.5 lakh per vehicle. That quota has been exhausted through demand, which means a new private EV car buyer will temporarily miss that specific incentive. Subsidies continue for electric two-wheelers and electric commercial vehicles under the remaining quota.
The Administration has been evaluating proposals to reallocate unused quota to support future car buyers, so this is the one line in this article most likely to change. Ask us what is live the day you buy.
Enhanced subsidies and women-focused benefits
To push adoption further, the UT has enhanced certain categories: electric two-wheelers receive higher per-kWh incentives, electric bicycles have an increased subsidy cap, and there are special incentives of up to ₹37,500 available for women EV buyers — a genuine attempt to bring more citizens into the switch rather than leaving it to early enthusiasts.
Charging infrastructure and digital ease
Adoption without charging support is a brochure promise. Chandigarh has expanded its network and has public EV charging stations operational across the city, including battery-swapping points.
A dedicated EV portal was also launched so buyers can apply online for incentives, track the status of a subsidy application, and see where public charging stations sit. That single portal is what makes the difference between a policy on paper and one you can actually claim.
The road ahead
The city has set itself the target of one of the highest EV adoption rates in India by 2027. That means more electric bikes, scooters, cars and commercial vehicles on the road, and cleaner air as a by-product.
What this means for you
Whether you are weighing up an electric scooter, an e-rickshaw or a four-wheeler, Chandigarh’s policy makes the switch more affordable and more rewarding than the sticker price suggests. As a dealer we would rather explain the incentive structure clearly and let you decide than bury it in a discount.
